This is a self portrait image of the artist Rio 'CAMBO' Campbell, alias cambo, in her studio half way through painting.

Rio Campbell (b.2001) is a multi-disciplinary artist specialising in painted works, blending social culture and symbolism to visualise the hidden forces of coincidence and humanity that hold us together.

Originating from a council estate in Hull, England, Campbell’s upbringing nurtured a unique ability to see beauty and composition in unconventional landscapes. As a self-taught artist, this trained insight is a vital step in her creative process; objects are pulled from their original context and re-imagined through striking painted compositions that create a purposeful tension between the detailed and the abstract.

For Campbell, painting is a method of translation—a way to bring her experience, skill, and insight into the physical realm to portray an intricate process of ideas. Her work deeply explores symbolism, mythology, folklore, iconography, and social history, layering these ancient narratives onto contemporary life. Deeply interested in the technical mastery of the Great Masters, Rio operates on the firm belief that an artist must truly master the foundational skills of painting before they can intentionally decide whether a subject requires a realistic or abstract approach.

With her video and photo work, however, digital and film formats are used to document the beauty of a moment or an idea exactly as she perceives it. Here, the context does the talking, adding depth to Campbells work through the lens of objective representation and social documentation.

Rio’s passion for her artistic journey brought her from England to Berlin in the summer of 2025, supported by a growing network of collectors across Europe. Currently based in Berlin, but mentally never far from home.
